As wildfires tore through Los Angeles in early 2025, President Trump blamed California’s management of forests and water, falsely claiming, among other things, that fires raged unchecked because Governor Gavin Newsom prioritized protecting a tiny fish (the smelt) over firefighting water needs. Trump signed an executive order to redirect water, despite experts saying the issue had nothing to do with Northern California’s fish or water supplies.
