Big box retailers like Target have announced that they have mounting inventories that they will need to discount in order to unload. They built up inventories due to pandemic-era shortages on the expectation that demand for goods would remain high. This kind of hording is inflationary. They guessed wrong. Consumers want to spend money on experiences now, like dining out and travel.
