I think the takeaway from this time lapse is that differences in scale can make a significant difference in a cartoon. When I first drew the sketch, the two characters were about the same size. As I refined the drawing, I made the head of the crazy guy much larger than his body in order to emphasize the crazed look on his face. Then I reduced his overall size relative to the SCOTUS character – whom I modeled on Alito because he wrote the Dobbs opinion that dismantled Roe. The differences in scale imply a power differential between the two. Then I gave Alito a smug, self-satisfied expression to finish it off. Nuances matter in a cartoon, and sometimes the effect on the reader is not conscious, but still effective.  If I had kept the scale of the characters the same as the initial sketch, the cartoon would have been less effective and less interesting visually.
