Anything coming out of the IRS is now suspect, and they must prove its authenticity to be able to use it to enforce anything. Want to audit me? Prove your data hasn’t been modified because I don’t believe you.

At any other time this type of activity would have been prevented by the safeguards created to protect the vital operations of the federal government, or, in the event of a slip-up, they would have been shut down immediately. The cowed (or complicit) GOP is continuing to let this happen.
Not sure about anyone else but here's the actions I've taken to protect my information and bank accounts. 1) I've placed a block on all credit checks with the big three credit bureaus. 2) I'm closing the joint bank account that we used for any IRS refund deposits, and opening a new account in a separate bank that only has a bare minimum of a deposit. 3) Called my credit card company and had them place some extra security measures on the card. 4) Called my credit union to ask them what they can do to shore of security on this matter.
It may not be enough to prevent a major nationwide identity theft, but it's at least a bit of a wrench to throw into the works.
