Stop Making Sense
OK, if you don’t get the references, there’s a bit to unpack in this cartoon.
Apparently, several top officials—including Marco Rubio and JD Vance—have been spotted wearing dress shoes that are comically too big, thanks in part to Donald Trump personally gifting them footwear… while apparently guessing their sizes.
Shoe experts say this isn’t unusual. Many men insist on larger sizes than they actually need, partly out of habit, partly confusion from sneaker sizing, and partly because, yes, some still think bigger shoes signal bigger… everything.
The result: cabinet members clomping around in ill-fitting shoes, proving that even at the highest levels of government, some men would rather look ridiculous than admit they’re a size smaller.
So I took that idea and ran with it, turning oversized shoes into an oversized suit. Which, of course, brought to mind David Byrne’s iconic giant suit from the Talking Heads’ 1983 Stop Making Sense tour. From there, it was an easy leap to the lyrics quoted in the cartoon, pulled from another famous song on that same album.
It’s a very Gen X cartoon. Hopefully I didn’t lose too many people along the way, but honestly, it seemed too perfect not to do, especially since Rubio stopped making sense a long time ago.
